St. Mark’s is a developmental preschool. We design all our class activities to meet the needs of your child. We have learning goals and objectives that help children acquire mastery in specific competencies that early learning educators promote.
During 2007-2008 school year, we met as a staff and created our own curriculum based upon current best practices in early childhood education, psychology, and the NC Department of Public Instruction’s Foundation of Early Learning. The result was a curriculum guide that aligns our instruction with critical developmental skills children need in the areas of social-emotional development, language development, cognitive development, fine motor skills development and gross motor skills development. We use this curriculum to develop our lessons and align it with assessments of each child. Each teacher has a copy of this curriculum guide and turns in monthly lesson plans that show how their instructional day aligns with this curriculum.
We also work together as a staff to ensure teachers are developing and delivering curriculum based on best teaching practices. New teachers have a mentor teacher to work with them to plan instruction, all age level teachers develop monthly lesson plans together, all teachers take continuing education units that directly relate to their professional development plans, and all teachers are formally and informally observed by the director and their mentors, if a new teacher, through out the year.
