Sunday School

St. Mark’s Sunday School hour is from 9:45 until 10:45. Our Nursery offers Sunday School during this time to infants through 3 years old. We have exciting activities and lessons for our Children ages 4-5, 6-7, and 8-10. The High School Youth and Middle School Youth have a special times each Sunday in family groups. We have a great variety of Adult Sunday School classes where you can find a place to belong with others who are like you, a place to give and receive support as you grow in your personal faith journey, and a place where you can begin to serve the body of Christ. Everyone is invited to Sunday School!

Children’s Sunday School:

At St. Mark’s UMC we take an exciting approach to Sunday school! Live B.I.G. helps children see, hear, and live their Belief In God. Short video segments bring faith-filled, high-energy excitement to the children with characters who model B.I.G. behavior, travel segments featuring B.I.G. ministries by everyday people and cool music clips.

  • Ages 6 & 7: God’s Garden in Room 211 (Education Building, 2nd floor)
  • Ages 8-10: Kidz Clubhouse in Room 209 (Education Building, 2nd floor)

Youth Family Groups (Sunday School)

St. Mark’s Youth have a great time on Sunday morning. Meetings are held in the Youth Grotto in the main building, beneath the sanctuary. Family groups are over for the summer, but will kick-off on August16 with a breakfast!

FUEL: High School Family Group

Our High School Family Group is called FUEL and follows the Fuel Series from Lifeway.Fuel is a dynamic DVD-driven curriculum designed to create a Bible-study experience for students like none other. Fuel has all the elements to help youth connect with Scripture. Intense drama, energetic teen hosts, and experienced youth leaders make this study unique and relevant to teen’s lives.” – Lifeway Fuel website.

Back to Basics: Middle School Family Group

Our Middle Schol Family Group is called Back to Basics and follows a curriculum that is based on the stories of the Bible.

Adult:

St. Mark’s offers a wide variety of adult classes. Every class is open and you are welcome to join us for one Sunday or for a longer-term relationship.

Friendship Class

Room 4 (Main Building, downstairs) -
Adult Bible Studies Quarterly Series: This ongoing Bible study program is presented in quarterly segments of 13 weeks each. It is a Bible-based and Christ-focused curriculum. Each week’s lesson includes:

  • A purpose statement that offers a focus for the session
  • The NRSV Scripture passage to be studied
  • A key verse to be memorized
  • A lesson that applies the Scripture text to our daily lives

Walter Anderson Class

Anderson Hall (Main Building, rear of Sanctuary) -
We are mature Christians who welcome all. We gather in the summer and in the winter for fellowship outside of the regular Sunday school hour. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power.” Ephesians 6:10. The Walter Anderson Class uses the Adult Bible Studies Quarterly Series described above.

Lecture and discussion format based on Scripture readings chosen by members of the class.

Sojourners

Room 1 (Main Building, downstairs) -
“What Would Jesus Do?” We discuss our response as committed Christians to current social, religious, and political issues. We coordinate and participate in activities that support a biblical call for spiritual renewal and social justice. Class members lead discussions on selected literature.

Friends in Faith: Young Adult Gathering

Watts Parlor (Main Building, on office wing) -
A young adult (ages 21-39) Sunday school class that seeks to make our faith real and relevant to our daily life in the world. Recently, we studied Beginnings by Tim Langford and Confronting the Controversies by Adam Hamilton. We have also studied Rob Bell’s, Nooma video series. We participate in many of St. Mark’s mission projects such as North Raleigh Ministries and Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network.

Pathfinders

Room 207 (Education Building, 2nd floor) -
Lecture format based on Scripture readings chosen by members of the class.

New Directions

Currently meeting in Main Building, downstairs -
Discussion format based on Scripture readings chosen by members of the class.

Abundant Life

Room 7 (Main Building, downstairs in Youth Grotto Hall) -
Our focus is to grow closer in knowledge and relationship with God and one another so as to achieve the promised abundance in life Jesus promised each of us. We understand that promise is not as just an accumulation of things, but richness in meaning and relationship with God and others.

JOY

Room 2 (Main Building, downstairs) -
A class for our exceptionally gifted adults. Led faithfully led by Elizabeth Owens.

Exploring Membership / New Member – Inquiry Class

Rosa Wakefield Parlor (Main Building, rear of Sanctuary & within Anderson Hall) -
Four sessions are offered per year, each session is five weeks long. Learn about the Bible, the United Methodist tradition, spiritual disciplines, gifts for ministry, and how to connect your unique gifts for ministry into life at St Mark’s United Methodist Church. Building relationships with other visitors and the pastors is primary to our mission. A light breakfast and nursery are provided.

“The EDGE” (Encouraging Devotion to God Everyday”

Room 205 (Education Building, 2nd floor) -
Started in Spring of 2008, this young adult Sunday school class is studying the NOOMA™ film series by Rob Bell.
