We all like to be recognized for the good work we do. Whether at home, work, church or in the community, it feels good to get a “pat on the back” from friends and colleagues for a job well done. And all too often, if someone else doesn’t do it, we’re happy to give ourselves a little pat. After all, with our hectic schedules, we have to make sacrifices in order to volunteer at our child’s school, serve on church committees and work late to finish that project. It seems only natural to toot our own horn once in a while.
However, after reading this passage in Matthew, it’s very clear that that’s exactly what God doesn’t want us to do. “…do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret…” Matthew 6:6
St. Mark’s is definitely listening to God and living into this Bible passage. Everywhere you turn there are servants doing whatever it takes to make great things happen at St. Mark’s. From children’s events to youth retreats to adult workshops and worship every Sunday, people are giving their time, gifts and resources to change the lives of others. I remember my surprise during the Ministry Parade at the number of ministries, as well as the number of people involved in each area. Many work behind the scenes, stepping up with little notice, willing to do whatever needs to be done, expecting nothing in return.
I’m inspired by these folks and I thank God for each and every one of them. They are responsible for the wonderful programs we have. They are responsible for the wonderful worship services we experience. They understand that it doesn’t matter if anyone else knows what we do. There will come a time when we will be recognized. ”…and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:6 And then let the horns blow!
Dear God, thank you for all those around me who give of themselves to help others. Please help me to serve others with a generous heart. Amen
