For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21
This verse gives me some perspective about the haves and have-nots in the world. Often it is difficult to make sense of the disparity of wealth in our culture – even in our own neighborhoods. But this verse reminds me that in the overall scheme of things, happiness is not directly related to how much cash you have in your pocket.
I am infinitely wealthier than those corporate CEOs, celebrities and even that guy down the street who just got another new car. I have friends, family, health and the joy of simple pleasures – like family game night, playing with my dogs and enjoying a simple walk or jog through the neighborhood.
Sure, we’re all on a budget, but if we look at that budget we’ll see where our true heart lies. Our kids, our pets, gifts for friends, donations to those in need, even a commitment to help renovate our church. St. Mark’s is full of people who are re-defining what it means to be wealthy.
Dear God, thank you for giving me the perspective to understand where my true heart lies and to know that my treasures are dedicated to your work. Help me to be your servant in all I do. Amen.
