This account of how John the Baptist’s body got separated from his head is a gruesome story full of violence and the strident misuse of power. As grotesque as the story is, it does have an important point to teach. John lost his head for being willing to speak the truth…for being willing to speak truth to power. He took a stand in spite of the consequences. Today disciples of Jesus Christ are called to speak up and to take a stand -will we? Or will we just sit idly by and comment, “somebody ought to do something”? Mark 6:14-29
