Lenten Devotional: April 1, 2009

Read John 12:20-33

“Purpose”

Amy Perry

In preparing for this devotion, I read 4 versions of the same text. I read the New King James Version, the New International Version, the New Interpreter’s Bible, and the Message. I took notes on each, but I was struck by three things.

     1) Each bible titled these passages differently.

NKJV – Fruitful Grain of Wheat

NIV – Jesus Predicts His Death

NIB – Some Greeks Wish to See Jesus

The Message – A Grain of Wheat Must Die.

     2) Each version told the same story.

     3) None of the versions changed the outcome of Jesus’ purpose.

Jesus was born to die for our sins. ALL of us and ALL sin. He did not whine, or cry, or quit, or say “Nope, Not me!” He saw that the purpose of His life was bigger than himself.  All of us have been asked to do the same thing, die to ourselves so that we may live in eternity.

What is your purpose?  Is it to be that one friendly face the homeless person sees on the street as you walk by? Is it to be that one Sunday School teach who pays special attention to the little girl who is acting out?  Is it to be that person who gives the person in front of you that dime that they need at the check out counter? Is it to be that one shoulder that a youth need when they have has a really bad day? Is it to be that one person who invites the grouchy neighbor to church on Sunday so that God can get their attention?

Are you ready to have purpose??

Please pray with me –

Heavenly Father, please open our heart, minds and eyes to see all that you have planned for us.  Give us that nudge to come out of our comfort zone that we may hear your will for us. Help us to have the courage to not run as Jonah did, but stand firm as your Son Jesus did so that we may fulfill your purpose for our lives to accomplish your work on earth.

In Jesus name we pray to you, Amen.
